152 container ships berth at Yangon Port in five months due to new waterway in Yangon River

A total of 152 over 30,000-ton ships have berthed at the jetties of the Yangon Port in the past five months after the draught limit of ships was eased as a new waterway was developed in Yangon River, according to the Myanmar Port Authority(MPA).

MPA is now making arrangements to resume operation of more routes from container shipping lines to ensure an increase in the shipment of export and import items in the coming open season and expects that up to 43 container ships will berth at the jetties of the Yangon Port this month. In the period of June to August, over 40 container ships berthed at the jetties monthly.

Currently, personnel of the MPA have been rendering services from time to time for the clearance of medicines and medical equipment on control and prevention of COVID-19 imported through maritime routes at the ports in accordance with the orders and directives on COVID-19 prevention and control.

The Ministry of Health has set a target of inoculating 50 to 70 percent of the population at the end of the year. COVID-19 vaccines and accessories thatarrived in the country are being  distributed to the respective regions and states with the use of aircraft of domestic airlines and cargo trucks.
