National Theater (Yangon) under major renovation

 

The National Theater (Yangon) is undergoing major renovation with the assistance from China, and the process is now completed by 52 percent, according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture, which is implementing the renovation.

Engineers from Beijing Construction Engineering Group are renovating the National Theater, and the renovation is scheduled to complete by the end of 2021.

Renovation of the National Theater started in August, 2019. Chinese President Li Xiannian presented the theater during his goodwill visit to Myanmar in 1985 as a token of friendship between two neighbours. The theater was opened in December, 1990, and it has been 30 years old.

With the assistance of China, the theater is being upgraded to be an international standard facility with modern sound and lighting systems, LED system, 4K resolution, air-conditioning, fire extinguishing and security systems.

The theatre is used for cultural exchange programs with foreign countries, for departmental work-shops, religious ceremonies, prize giving ceremonies, performing arts competitions, and for musical stage shows.
