Nearly 200,000 passengers riding YBS daily in Yangon

‘‘All the YBS city bus lines in Yangon resumed their operations on 2 this month, transport-ing nearly 200,000 passengers per day,’’ said U Lian Cin Mang, joint secretary of Yangon Region Transport Committee (YR-TC) which is responsible for supervising all private cars in the city.

‘‘But, lines have not used their entire force yet. Some of the lines restarted their city public transport services on 2 August. They are mainly operating along the routes that are essen-tial for most of the commuters. Nearly 200,000 passengers are riding the buses daily, up about 90,000 from the previous month, when some of the bus lines were still sitting idle,’’ U Lian Cin Mang said.

Under the announcement of Central Committee for Preven-tion, Control and Treatment of COVID-19, bus services of the Yangon Urban Public Tran-sportation Public Co.,Ltd (YU-PT) halted their operations on weekends and public holidays in view of the safety pass-engers, the company and its staff from dangers of COVID-19. But, individual owned bus lines were providing commuter services on those days.

But on 2 August, all the buses under YUPT and private companies resumed their operations.

Eight city bus lines are now operating 1,419 cars for public transport services and carry-ing nearly 200,000 commuters daily, the number which is nearly 90,000 higher than that of the previous month when most of the bus lines had suspended their services.

During the pre-COVID-19 period, Yangon city had 102 bus lines with a total fleet of 4,400 cars and they were transpor-ting nearly 200,000 commuters every day.
