Survey on bird species to be conducted in Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary

Plans are underway to con-duct a survey on bird species in Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary in Kachin State on 30 August, according to Administrator U Maung Win of the sanctuary.

“We conduct a survey on bird species every month. This month, we will conduct the survey on 30 August. Only ten winter bird species were re-corded in the previous survey. It is likely that we will be able to record fewer species this month. In December, there were about 20,000 birds from more than 40 species. Pelicans have arrived since the beginning of the monsoon. They will return in the winter. Currently, there are only a few migrant species and local species. There are over 800 birds from about 30 species of local birds. It takes about three days to conduct a survey,” he said.

The Indawgyi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Myanmar and is a habitat for local rare species as well as for migratory bird species.

As the lake is a tour destina-tion for domestic travellers, local people are required to conserve the environment by clearing litter in the lake.

The environs of the sanctuary were designated as a bio-sphere by the 29 UNESCO meeting held in France on 14 June 2017.

The sanctuary was establi-shed in Mai Naung Forest Re-serve in 1905 during colonial times. In 1912, Nant Yinkha Forest reserve was added to the sanctuary. Today, the san-ctuary covers 201,383 acres of land on five forest reserves.
