Yangon-Mandalay railroad upgrading project continues with momentum

Yangon-Mandalay railroad upgrading project is continuing with two up and down railroad sections of project phase 1 are due to be finished by August, according to Myanma Railways (MR).

The two railroad sections already completed are Phayathyi-Phaungdawthi (18.75 miles) and Peinzalok-Tawkywein (9.25 miles). The two other sections to finish soon are Pyuntaza (6.5 miles) and Nyaunglaybin-Peinzalok (9.25 miles), said MR Managing Director U Ba Myint.

The project is being implemented by MR of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Japan International Cooperation Agency. The project is of two phases—Phase 1 (166 miles) spanning Yangon and Taungoo and Phase 2 (219 miles) spanning Taungoo and Mandalay. 

The 385-mile Yangon-Mandalay railroad passes through 23 townships. In phase 1, 10 new railway stations will be built and the existing 89 will be upgraded. The project also includes border fencing, closing level crossings and building bypasses and overpasses.

A train takes about 15 hours on the railroad at a speed of 38 miles per hour. After the project, travelling hours will be only eight.
