Domestic and international demand for fish remain low

Myanmar’s domestic and international fish markets are unlikely to recover in next few months due to COVID-19, according to Myanmar Fisheries Federation. The fish market recovered 60 to 70 percent of pre-crisis level in June and July, but as the country has been hit by the second wave of the pandemic in August, industry insiders predict that the demand will remain low.

“The demand has declined because restaurants have closed, and donations and public gatherings are also banned, and people are not travelling. The decline in per capita income also plays a factor in declined fish consumption,” said general secretary of Myanmar Fi-sheries Federation U Win Kyaing. The government’s three month’s ban on fishing will end on 31 August, but the demand will likely to remain low unless and until COVID-19 is put under control.
